Ema

SYNOPSIS

SINOPSE

Somewhere in a provincial town in Moldova, in the winter of 1992, a young woman called Ema walks silently around all sorts of unattractive places, in the search of meaning or happiness, much like the famous Emma Bovary from Gustave Flaubert’s novel of the same name, which we glimpse lying on a desk at some point. She would project herself onto the protagonist played by Isabelle Huppert in “The Lacemaker,” she would gladly be someone’s muse, she would do anything to evade this desolate and boring reality, where the only forms of escape from the monotony of daily life are movies, dreams (which are sometimes nightmares with sexual connotations), and a radio show (‘Without prejudice, on prejudice’) about penile implants. Beyond its stylistic merits, what makes this film even more exciting are its allegorical discourse on femininity and male castration anxiety, as well as the satirical way in which it treats the transition from the old communist system to the newer capitalism.
